Alexandra Lopez, MA, LCADC, SAC, CPS, CCS, BCPC, MAC, ICCS, ICADC is an experienced clinician, educator, and consultant working in the field of prevention since 1998. Ms. Lopez obtained her Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Education at Kean University. She holds an Assistant Professor position at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, at Rutgers University, since 2010. Ms. Lopez uses an experiential model of learning to include lecture, demonstration, case studies, and individual and small group interaction, to stimulate participants' engagement and practical learning.

Course Description
The training provides an overview of the concepts and study of Cultural Competency from a strength-based perspective. Participants will review concepts related to Worldview & Mindset as they reflect on their personal level of cultural competence. Participants will be introduced to the concept and study of Cultural Humility as an alternative to the traditional constructs of “competency”. Participants will develop an understanding of the reasoning and benefits of a culturally competent organizational structure with a focus on client management and service delivery that considers culture in all aspects of assessment, treatment, care and discharge. Participants will engage in practical learning by application of skills and techniques while experiencing a culturally competent training approach that models strategies to identify and build on personal and professional cultural assets.

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for social workers, and other professionals in the addictions and mental health field, to further develop awareness through continuous self evaluation along the cultural competence continuum. The full day workshop will be presented in a manner that will be most useful for intermediate level clinician with a focus on client management and service delivery that considers culture in all aspects of assessment, treatment, care and discharge.

Attendees will receive certificate of credit after completion of course and participant satisfaction evaluation.
